Please make sure that you register at the Main Entrance at Birmingham Hippodrome for 9.30am on Sun 21 May 2017. We have moved the registration to the Main Entrance to allow for more space.

These are the rules and regulations of The Ultimate StreetDance Competition taking place on May 21st. This manual contains the entry requirements, procedure, rules and regulations for participating in this competition.

The Ultimate StreetDance Crew Comp

Putting the art of group freestyle dance back into focus, expanding the skill set and raising the bar again.

We are here to find the of ultimate hip hop dance crew. Groups that can not only perform organised choreography on a commercial stage, but can also take care of business freestylin in a club, in a park, in any cypher, in any battle on any street! Too much focus has been placed on one medium of performance, we want expand the skill set.

Crews of max 10 Crewmembers

Format: Qualifying 1st round showcase.

1st Round will be a performance round we are looking for groups of no more than 10 members. The performance must consist of the dance styles of Hip Hop and related styles i.e. Breakin, Rockin, Poppin, Lockin, Hip Hop Freestyle/Social, Krump, Waakin, etc…

These Dance styles together we term STREETDANCES. For the first round groups can either be specialists of one style or can combine multiple StreetDance styles into their performance which should last no longer than 3 minutes, with a minimum of 1 minute.

Groups must show the streetdance styles they do with skill and creativity as individuals and a group, smooth transitions between the two will be rewarded with context, music and themes portrayed.

All dancers must start on stage and must remain on stage for the whole of their performance time and use as much of the stage as necessary for their performance.

Scoring the Routine

The Hip Hop Crew routine is evaluated according to the Performance and Skill criteria for the highest possible total score of 200 points.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA AND POINT VALUE:

PERFORMANCE (MAX SCORE: 50)

Judges will give points for the quality of the overall performance. The quality of the music productions, quality and level of the dance performance, energy, quality of routines, transitions, formations, originality, creativity, presentation, technique, use of music.

Bonus points will be given for higher levels of creativity regarding creation of/and original use of moves in each of the known ‘StreetDance styles’, original combinations

FORMATIONS, STAGING, SPACING (MAX: 10)

Bonus points will awarded to groups that give and show extra special attention to details in their presentation and having a theme and then sticking to it and showing throughout their performance.

SHOWMANSHIP/ENTERTAINMENT/AUDIENCE APPEAL & REACTION (MAX: 10)

Groups will receive bonus points for great showmanship, gravitas, creating/raising the energy of the crowd, ability to interact with the audience to.

SKILL CRITERIA AND POINT VALUE:

SKILL (MAX SCORE: 30)

The judges will evaluate the overall execution and difficulty of the StreetDance style(s) performed; popping, locking, breaking, hip hop, house, etc. The judges will consider the quality of movement throughout the routine, including arm, leg and body placement, combinations of three levels-floor, standing and air. Execution of flips and power moves.

MUSICALITY  (MAX: 30)

Performance and choreography corresponding to timing and music usage and the crew’s ability to perform simultaneously to the music. Movements and patterns performed to the simulated sounds of the crewmembers in the absence of recorded music (e.g., foot stomping, hand clapping, vocals, etc.) will also be considered musicality and judged similarly.

Musicality – Beat Technique/Syncopation – The movements within the routine must demonstrate musical structure and style, i.e., using rhythmic variations emphasizing upbeat, downbeat, tempo and accents in single, double, halftime and syncopated musical patterns.

VARIETY OF STREET DANCE STYLES  (MAX:10)

Bonus points will be awarded to the performances that show a contextual variety of styles instead of just throwing a whole heap of styles together and not showing a nice blend between them.

SEMI-FINALS & FINAL ROUNDS/ CREW BATTLES.

The format on these rounds will be a head-to-head crew battle with a live DJ playing a constant mix of music related to all the ‘STREETDANCE’ styles for the duration of the rounds. For example crew  Breakin battles at UK BBoy Champs but with all hip hop styles and music. THE DANCERS USED IN THE SEMI-FINALS & FINAL ROUNDS MUST BE THE SAME ONES USED IN THE PRELIMS/QUALIFICATION ROUND!!  Barring severe injury to any dancer, all crew members must be present. If they cannot participate in the battle, they must stay and support their crew!

Duration of these rounds are:

SEMI FINALS – 7 MINS
