Please make sure that you register at the Main Entrance at Birmingham Hippodrome for 9.30am on Sun 21 May 2017. We have moved the registration to the Main Entrance to allow for more space.
These are the rules and regulations of The Ultimate StreetDance Competition taking place on May 21st. This manual contains the entry requirements, procedure, rules and regulations for participating in this competition.
The Ultimate StreetDance Crew Comp
Putting the art of group freestyle dance back into focus, expanding the skill set and raising the bar again.
We are here to find the of ultimate hip hop dance crew. Groups that can not only perform organised choreography on a commercial stage, but can also take care of business freestylin in a club, in a park, in any cypher, in any battle on any street! Too much focus has been placed on one medium of performance, we want expand the skill set.
Crews of max 10 Crewmembers
Format: Qualifying 1st round showcase.
1st Round will be a performance round we are looking for groups of no more than 10 members. The performance must consist of the dance styles of Hip Hop and related styles i.e. Breakin, Rockin, Poppin, Lockin, Hip Hop Freestyle/Social, Krump, Waakin, etc…
These Dance styles together we term STREETDANCES. For the first round groups can either be specialists of one style or can combine multiple StreetDance styles into their performance which should last no longer than 3 minutes, with a minimum of 1 minute.
Groups must show the streetdance styles they do with skill and creativity as individuals and a group, smooth transitions between the two will be rewarded with context, music and themes portrayed.
All dancers must start on stage and must remain on stage for the whole of their performance time and use as much of the stage as necessary for their performance.
Scoring the Routine
The Hip Hop Crew routine is evaluated according to the Performance and Skill criteria for the highest possible total score of 200 points.
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA AND POINT VALUE:
PERFORMANCE (MAX SCORE: 50)
Judges will give points for the quality of the overall performance. The quality of the music productions, quality and level of the dance performance, energy, quality of routines, transitions, formations, originality, creativity, presentation, technique, use of music.
CREATIVITY (MAX: 20)
Bonus points will be given for higher levels of creativity regarding creation of/and original use of moves in each of the known ‘StreetDance styles’, original combinations
FORMATIONS, STAGING, SPACING (MAX: 10)
Bonus points will be awarded for groups that have extra creative, complex and efficient use of the whole stage. Imaginative, unique and difficult formations, accurate and consistent spacing, creative and technical use of different levels, partner moves, movements and patterns.
PRESENTATION/THEME (MAX: 10)
Bonus points will awarded to groups that give and show extra special attention to details in their presentation and having a theme and then sticking to it and showing throughout their performance.
SHOWMANSHIP/ENTERTAINMENT/AUDIENCE APPEAL & REACTION (MAX: 10)
Groups will receive bonus points for great showmanship, gravitas, creating/raising the energy of the crowd, ability to interact with the audience to.
SKILL CRITERIA AND POINT VALUE:
SKILL (MAX SCORE: 30)
The judges will evaluate the overall execution and difficulty of the StreetDance style(s) performed; popping, locking, breaking, hip hop, house, etc. The judges will consider the quality of movement throughout the routine, including arm, leg and body placement, combinations of three levels-floor, standing and air. Execution of flips and power moves.
MUSICALITY (MAX: 30)
Performance and choreography corresponding to timing and music usage and the crew’s ability to perform simultaneously to the music. Movements and patterns performed to the simulated sounds of the crewmembers in the absence of recorded music (e.g., foot stomping, hand clapping, vocals, etc.) will also be considered musicality and judged similarly.
Musicality – Beat Technique/Syncopation – The movements within the routine must demonstrate musical structure and style, i.e., using rhythmic variations emphasizing upbeat, downbeat, tempo and accents in single, double, halftime and syncopated musical patterns.
Musicality – Moves Related to Music – Staying in time with the music, moving to the beat of the music, and using identifiable phrases to construct the routine’s choreography.
SYNCHRONISATION / TIMING (MAX: 10)
Bonus points will be awarded to groups performing, showing higher levels of synchronisation and timing though the whole group and their performance.
EXECUTION/CONTROLLED MOBILITY AND STABILISATION (MAX: 10)
Bonus points will be awarded to performances that show higher levels of control of moves, movements and tricks.
DIFFICULTY AND EXECUTION OF AUTHENTIC STREET DANCE STYLES (MAX: 10)
Bonus points will be awarded to performances that show higher levels of execution of the named StreetDance styles and raise the stakes by performing more difficult and complex moves & steps.
VARIETY OF STREET DANCE STYLES (MAX:10)
Bonus points will be awarded to the performances that show a contextual variety of styles instead of just throwing a whole heap of styles together and not showing a nice blend between them.
SEMI-FINALS & FINAL ROUNDS/ CREW BATTLES.
The format on these rounds will be a head-to-head crew battle with a live DJ playing a constant mix of music related to all the ‘STREETDANCE’ styles for the duration of the rounds. For example crew Breakin battles at UK BBoy Champs but with all hip hop styles and music. THE DANCERS USED IN THE SEMI-FINALS & FINAL ROUNDS MUST BE THE SAME ONES USED IN THE PRELIMS/QUALIFICATION ROUND!! Barring severe injury to any dancer, all crew members must be present. If they cannot participate in the battle, they must stay and support their crew!
Duration of these rounds are:
SEMI FINALS – 7 MINS
FINALS – 10 MINS
The battle will be judged on dance skills and performance of the whole group and the individuals within the battle.
- Musicality, adaptation and flow with what and how the DJ plays the music
- When routines are performed, which crew within the battle had the best, most creative and synchronised.
- Tactics use within the battle
- Dance variation and vocabulary
- Crowd entertainment, reaction and showmanship.
At the end of the battle the judges will decide which crew did the best by show of hands after a countdown by host. The crew with the most votes wins.
Competition Floor for Crews of 10 crewmembers
The standard competition floor is 30’ x 30’ (9.1 meters x 9.1 meters). The competition organizer may adjust the size of the
performance floor and must notify all participants in advance of the competition. Under no circumstance will the
competition floor be less than 20’ deep x 30’ wide (6.1 meters x 9.1 meters).

Can you street dance? Can you freestyle as well as showcase the best routines? Want to perform on the main stage at Birmingham Hippodrome?

Qualification will take place on the main stage at Birmingham Hippodrome from 9.30am-1pm and the top four crews will then will battle it out head to head at the B-SIDE Festival Finals on Sun 21 May from 4pm!

QUALIFIERS
Each crew (max 10 members) must perform a dance routine (MAX 3 MINS) and offer a mix of formats (solos, duets etc) to showcase your strongest style. Music for the showcase can be your own mix brought on memory stick / aux lead.
SEMI-FINALS & FINALS
Crews perform dance routine then go head-to-head, 1 dancer at a time, commandos or short routines with 100% freestyle the aim, responding to the live DJ’s music selection (MAX 10 MINS)
